WMG2009 / 2009 IWF Masters World Championships

WMG2009 / 2009 IWF Masters World Championships

It’s time !!

Registration is now available on line at the following website http://www.2009worldmasters.com/How-to-register-for-the-Games/default.aspx

As a reminder, the following steps need to be taken once a lifter qualifies:

STEP 1
• An entry form for the 2009 IWFMasters Championship , as attached to this site, needs to be forwarded by the 1st June 2009. There has been some confusion as the qualifying time on the form is scheduled between the 27th.September and the 30th.June 2009. The reason I have stipulated that all forms are to be on my desk by the 1st of June is that I need to compile and check them before sending them off postmarked 30th.June. Every year there have been entry mistakes or inaccurate cheques that have needed to be rectified. If any athlete feels this date produces hardship in qualifying please contact me as soon as possible on lawrietownsend@bigpond.com Please be aware that the IWF Masters administration are completely unforgiving for late entries and there is a history of countries not being accepted.
STEP 2
• Register, preferably on line, with the WMG2009 to complete all requirements for this exciting event.

An enormous amount of work and organization has gone into making this competition the premium event on the Masters calendar. The venue is spectacular and located in the midst of the 2000 Olympic site with its cafes and restaurants all close by. The WMG are regarded as the ‘Masters Olympics’ and will be a week of great lifting and socializing.

Trusting you are all training hard for this great event,

Urgent news for All Masters

The IWF Masters Executive have become very concerned at the declining numbers of competitors at the WMG2009 / IWF Masters Championships due to the global economic downturn. Consequently, as a one off decision, they have lowered the qualifying standard to the level of the European WF Masters Championships.

Please note the new qualifying totals

AWF Masters Championships Report

I am pleased to report the 2009 AWF Masters Championships continued the success we have achieved in recent years; on and off the platform. As expected, many lifters are building up for the WMG2009 in Sydney in October so we were able to witness some excellent lifting and good battles.

In particular, Chris Duthie and Peter Foster had a great battle with Chris stretched to his limit to win gold. Ray Louden was also pushed in his win over Ludek Prokes with both lifters showing great spirit on the platform. Good to see the Holt family supporting our masters movement every year and performing so well on the platform.

I struggle to recall a competition over the last 10 years without Chris attending and performing well. It was very pleasing to see Chris Duthie, Peter Foster, Warren Hellisen, Alex Goodyear, Graham Walker and Craig Wegert perform so well and they will be the basis of a very strong Men’s team in Sydney. I was also impressed with the technique shown by Michael Torriero and Nick Milankovic; both relatively ‘newcomers’ to our sport.

The women showed excellent technique with the best lifter going to Diana Loy followed by Coral Quinell and Lisa Souter. These three lifters will form the nucleus of a very strong and formidable women’s team at the WMG2009. Overall, an excellent result for the women but I hope we have some representation from NSW and SA next year.

Interesting to note that the male best lifter trophy no longer automatically goes to the oldest lifter and there were seven male lifters achieving in excess of 300SMM points; indicating a very high standard. The best lifter went to Craig Wegert narrowly passing Warren Hellisen and Chris Holt; very pleasing to see the strength in Masters now in the earlier age groups. Congratulations to the Victorian team, led by Goran Vukojevic, for winning the team trophy again; however, the gap is narrowing so don’t bolt the trophy down to hard !

Overall, the highlights were the standard of lifting, the excellent presentation by the Geelong Weightlifting Club and the overwhelming support of the VWA. A special thanks to the VWA president Martin Leach and his team for such a successful day as I am aware that Martin transported equipment until the early hours of Sunday morning and then drove back to Bendigo !

The attendance and support of the AWF President, Robert Kabbas and our CEO, Matthew Curtain significantly added to the occasion and was very much appreciated by all.
Best wishes for training for the WMG2009; regarded by the IWF as ‘our Masters Olympics’.
